Report sees 'aggressive' price decline in 10G Ethernet switches

Feb. 18, 2013
The market for 10 Gbps server ports is expected to grow more than five-fold by 2017.

New research from telecommunications and networking industries specialist Dell’Oro Group says that the market for 10 Gbps server ports is expected to grow more than five-fold by 2017.

“We are forecasting an aggressive price decline in 10 Gbps switches in the first half of 2013 that will be driven by a switch refresh cycle based on Broadcom Trident II switch silicon," explains Sameh Boujelbene, senior analyst covering Controller & Adapter market research at Dell’Oro Group. "We expect this price decline will propel 10 Gbps server adoption because switches aggregating servers comprise more than one-third of the end-to-end price."

“In addition, we predict server migration to 40 Gbps to be faster than 10 Gbps, as higher density switches come to market, and service providers, or 'the cloud' become a larger portion of the customers,” adds Dell'Oro's Boujelbene.

Dell’Oro Group's Controller and Adapter 5-Year Forecast Report discusses how the drivers of 40 Gbps differ from those of 10 Gbps, and why 10G Base-T is such a critical technology for small and medium businesses.
