Gefen adds long, short range options for HDMI, HDBaseT extension over Cat 5 cabling

Among the first companies to be HDBaseT-certified, Gefen has added new cabling extenders using the popular connectivity standard for uncompressed multimedia content.

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen, among the first companies to be HDBaseT-certified, announced that it has added new cabling extenders using the popular connectivity standard for uncompressed multimedia content.

The Gefen 4K Ultra HD ELR-POL extender with RS-232 and IR provides a long-range transmission of 4K Ultra HD content with RS-232 and bi-directional IR capabilities. POL [Power over Line] technology provides power to the receiver unit using the same single Cat 5 cable, and alleviates the need for an external power supply at the receiver side. Distances up to 150 meters at 1080p full HD and up to 100 meters at 4K Ultra HD can be achieved using this extender.

Content is delivered with near zero latency using industry-standard Cat 5 cabling combined with Gefen’s ELR (Extra Long Range) implementation of the HDBaseT technology. As is widely understood, the cornerstone of HDBaseT technology is the 5Play feature set, a compilation that converges uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable and control signals using a single Cat 5 cable. ELR provides value-added features above and beyond the HDBaseT specification, including EDID management and improved compatibility. The new extender is ideal for a high quality signal extension using in-conduit cabling, says the company. Users can easily upgrade their audio/video system without uprooting existing cabling.

Also newly introduced, the Gefen Extender for HDMI over Cat 5 delivers HDMI a slightly shorter distance, up to 70 meters. This extender provides a viable alternative to other longer distance, more robust extension solutions, contends the company. One Cat 5 cable is used to send HDMI at 1080p full HD resolutions along with multi-channel audio including DTS-Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. 3DTV content is supported when combined with a 3D-ready source and display. This extender sends HDMI from source to display using compact desktop or wall mountable sender and receiver units. This extender comes with mounting and plates and locking power supplies to stabilize performance.
