Google Fiber seeks OSP infrastructure managers in NY, CA

Successful candidates will be expected to "own the standards and specifications for inside and outside plant optical networking infrastructure for Google campus and metro."

Google Fiber is seeking candidates for the position of Manager, Outside Plant Infrastructure, in the cities of New York, NY and Mountain View, CA. The job description for the position is as follows:

"As the Manager of Outside Plant Infrastructure, you will use your broad and deep background in real world physical layer infrastructure networking to lead Google's teams in managing the aggressively growing and evolving physical network assets. You will manage the transactional organization which monitors, repairs, and maintains with complete and continuous awareness of Google’s physical network infrastructure. You will measure and monitor current performance against Service Level Agreements (SLA) and continuously improve the processes and performance driving down our ‘mean time to resolve’ (MTTR) metric. You will work with internal customers to find areas of improvement and efficiency, and facilitate the documentation and lifecycle management of Google’s physical network infrastructure. You will manage a distributed transactional team, driving process improvements, and facilitate vendor improvement and management of the infrastructure all of Google relies on."

Stated responsibilities for the Manager, Outside Plant Infrastructure position are as follows:

-- "Hire, mentor and structure team and tools for rapid identification and resolution of physical layer network issues; Track all faults of the physical network, develop and execute escalation processes with our numerous vendors to quickly resolve faults and restore service. Work closely with Network Architecture and Engineering. Plan physical layer SMEs to ensure physical layer designs as carried through vendors are compliant with Network Operations standards."

-- "Develop the measurement systems for the organization and apply statistical process control to continuously improve the team's performance against speed and quality SLA. Specify via Scope of Work (SOWs) and standard architecture documents, then review and critically evaluate bids and options for physical network infrastructure and optical cabling, including both ISP and OSP. Consider in all cases the operational impacts, deployment, and implementation challenges associated with design implementation."

-- "Own the standards and specifications for inside and outside plant optical networking infrastructure for Google campus and metro. Partner with teams to ensure all designs and implementations balance the current requirements and potential future generations of networking technology."

-- "Lead kickoff and drive cross-functional meetings. Manage exceptions and communicate issues and risks to the rest of the organization. Identify cost and delivery metrics then drive initiatives to improve the efficiency, quality and to scale with the growth of Google. Interact with corporate legal, local authorities, jurisdictions, and permitting entities."

Preferred qualifications for the job are as follows: "MS/PhD degree in an engineering discipline; Participation and/or authorship in IEEE, TIA, ISO organizations or similar industry organizations -- also RCDD, DCDC or other similar professional certification; Management experience running in a distributed capacity and/or working with geographically diverse teams; Proven track record of leadership in high-growth, rapidly-evolving environments, with demonstrated experience leading a high volume transactional operations team; Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the proven ability to present proposals to executives for quantifiable, data-driven solutions."
