Open Networking Foundation opens SDN professional certification program

ONF releases SDN skills certification exam blueprints.

Software-defined networking (SDN) authority the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) says beta examination blueprints for its ONF-Certified SDN Professional (OCSP) Program certification are now available. The SDN credentials program targets certification of individuals as either an ONF-Certified SDN Associate (OCSA) or as an ONF-Certified SDN Engineer (OCSE).

The ONF expects to make available beta exams based on these blueprints in September. The first 100 aspirants to each certification will be allowed to take the beta exams for free. The tests will be administered online via secure login. Those who pass will receive an official OCSP certification, despite the beta nature of the exams.

The ONF-Certified SDN Associate (OCSA) certification attests to possession of vendor-neutral conceptual knowledge of the major domains of networking practices that support the theory and practice of SDN. The associate certification validates concept-level knowledge of SDN technologies, architectures, and deployment solutions. It is designed for entry-level sales and marketing professionals. Those interesting in acquiring this certification should have a foundational knowledge of computer networking and familiarity with various conceptual models of networking and technologies. The ONF OCSA exam consists of 40 questions to be answered within 60 minutes.

Meanwhile, the ONF-Certified SDN Engineer (OCSE) certifies the recipient has vendor-neutral technical knowledge, skills, and abilities in the major domains of networking practices that support the theory and practice of SDN. The engineer certification is intended to validate technical and engineering-level knowledge of SDN technologies, architectures, and deployment solutions. It is designed for entry-level SDN engineering and networking professionals, but is considered a mastery-level certification. Aspirants should have a deep technical understanding of computer networking as well as experience with SDN networking. The ONF OCSE exam includes 70 questions to be answered within 90 minutes.

Those who pass an OCSP certification exam will receive a certificate and an authorized registration number for their certification, which will be managed through a global online portal available to certification owners and prospective employers. The certifications will be delivered once beta testing is complete and the formal program launches later this year. Additional certification categories will be announced later, the ONF says.
