Panduit joins Software-Defined Video over Ethernet Alliance

May 17, 2017
Physical layer infrastructure provider is now a contributing member of the industry group that says 10-Gbit Ethernet is the platform for converging AV and IT systems.

The Software-Defined Video over Ethernet Alliance (SDVoE Alliance) recently announced that Panduit joined as a contributing member to the group. “Panduit will work toward the organization’s goals of standardizing the adoption of Ethernet to transport AV signals in professional AV environments, and creating an ecosystem around SDVoE technology that allows software to define AV applications,” the alliance said.

Panduit’s vice president of enterprise business, Dennis Renaud, commented that the company “is excited to be the first cabling and connectivity manufacturer to join the SDVoE Alliance as a contributing member. The alliance and Panduit have similar goals of promoting the expansion and standardization of an AV-over-IP solution. This gives Panduit an opportunity to introduce our high-quality, industry-leading network products and solutions to the pro AV market.”

Justin Kennington, SDVoE Alliance president, added, “SDVoE is the only off-the-shelf technology for pro AV that offers a full-stack solution, addressing the entire seven-layer OSI stack with solutions at every layer. Panduit provides vital infrastructure that supports the Ethernet physical layer, the basis upon which all the other layers are built. We welcome their valuable contribution and participation in the alliance and look forward to working with them as we provide the solid, stable, reliable and cost-effective AV-over-IP platform the pro AV market seeks.”

The alliance said that AV distribution and processing applications that demand zero-latency can benefit from SDVoE technology, “which provides an end-to-end hardware and software platform for AV extension, switching, processing and control through advanced chipset technology, common control APIs and interoperability.” The alliance added, “SDVoE network architectures are based on off-the-shelf Ethernet switches, thus offering substantial cost savings and greater system flexibility and scalability over traditional approaches such as point-to-point extension and circuit-based AV matrix switching.”

The SDVoE Alliance was launched in January 2017 by founding members AptoVision, Aquantia, Christie Digital, Netgear, Sony, and ZeeVee. At that time, Kennington observed, “For years we have lived with the idea that AV/IT convergence is coming. The SDVoE Alliance and its technology finally provide the platform that is necessary to enable it. Using 10-Gbit Ethernet hardware to move video with flawless quality and zero latency is only the beginning. The creation of a software platform enables the development of whole new classes of applications not yet conceived. True convergence is finally here.”
