Verizon to use LTE small cells from Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson

The small cells will be used primarily to enhance localized capacity and coverage.

Phil Goldstein of FierceWireless recently reported that Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) plans to use LTE small cell products from Alcatel-Lucent (NASDAQ: ALU) and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), starting in the second half of this year. The two companies are the primary radio access network (RAN) vendors for Verizon's LTE network, notes the report.

Verizon said that, primarily, the small cells will be used to enhance localized capacity and coverage, such as in a business district or shopping mall where there is a high amount of communications traffic. In a statement, the carrier also said that small cells will complement its distributed antenna systems (DAS) footprint.
