OFS unveils new Fitel identifier optimized for bend-insensitive fiber

OFS has introduced the Furukawa Electric Fitel Right-Bend fiber identifier, a tool that can identify signals on bend-insensitive fiber.

The Fitel Right-Bend tool identifies bend-insensitive optical fibers by using local detection technology to detect the optical signals passing through the fiber. OFS asserts that, unlike similar products on the market, the new tool can identify the signal in bend-insensitive fibers such as OFS's EZ-Bend fiber -- which is normally difficult because the fiber is designed to prevent optical loss in tight-bend situations.

The fiber identifier works by clamping onto a fiber and inducing a safe macrobend, enabling a small amount of light to escape. By collecting and analyzing the light, the instrument detects the presence of network traffic, test tones, and continuous-wave signals and can determine the direction of signal flow. This allows technical personnel to unambiguously identify a specific fiber and help eliminate the risk of accidental disruption of service.

OFS says the instrument's rugged construction is designed for ease of use in inside plant and outside plant applications. For maximum battery life, the instrument also features an automatic power-down circuit.
