Cabling standards for Category 8, DAS the focus of web seminar

Oct. 17, 2014
Participants in the TIA’s cabling standards-development process will bring attendees up to speed on these in-development specifications.

On Wednesday, October 22, Cabling Installation & Maintenance will host a one-hour web seminar titled “Cabling Standards Update,” in which the presentations will focus on the Telecommunications Industry Association’s (TIA) continuing development of specifications for Category 8 cabling performance, and for cabling infrastructure to support distributed antenna systems (DAS).

The seminar’s first presentation, titled “DAS Cabling Specifications Under Development,” will be delivered by David Tanis, director of technical education services for CommScope. Tanis will “take an overview look at TSB-5018 Structured Cabling Infrastructure Standard to Support Distributed Antenna Systems,” Cabling Installation & Maintenance explained when describing the seminar. This presentation will describe “how the document will enable the deployment of a cabling infrastructure equipped to support the specific demands of distributed antenna systems.”

The second presentation, “Category 8 Standard Development Update,” will be delivered by Optical Cable Corporation (OCC) product design engineer Derrick Stikeleather. “This presentation will take a broad look at the status of the Category 8 standard, including preliminary performance parameters,” Cabling Installation & Maintenance said. “It also will discuss the relationship that exists between the TIA’s Category 8 development effort and the IEEE’s efforts to develop a set of 40GBase-T specifications.”

The information provided during the web seminar will not be an official report from any cabling standards organization, including TIA. Rather, it will be the expressions of the companies and individuals involved in the event.

Individuals who attend the seminar in its entirety will be eligible to received one continuing education credit (CEC) from BICSI toward that association’s ICT professional designations.
