The Wall Street Journal's CIO Journal blog had a good piece investigating technology research firm's Gartner's recent contention that Internet of Things (IoT) is poised to combine with new digital mesh technologies to drive innovation, while transforming the business landscape in upcoming years.
As reported by WSJ's Angus Loten, "The Internet of Things is among the hottest topics in IT, and one of the most fragmented, according to Gartner Fellow and Vice President David Cearley. Speaking to a packed house at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo on Tuesday [Oct. 6], Mr. Cearley cited IoT platforms as one of 10 technology trends that will reshape businesses in the years ahead."
The report continues:
"For Mr. Cearley, IoT is among 'new IT realities' that CIOs and other enterprise decision-makers need to grapple with soon to avoid becoming a 'disruptee' in a digital marketplace driven by disruptors.
Another broad area is 'digital mesh,' which merges real and virtual worlds of data generated by people, processes and devices, typified by wearable devices and 3-D printing. He also pointed to developments in smart machines, such as robots and autonomous vehicles, that use machine-learning technologies to understand and refine their own actions.
But competing vendor approaches will continue to make standardization in IoT difficult over the next several years, he said."
