The 1993 Atlantic hurricane season was rated below average, producing 8 tropical cyclones and storms and 4 hurricanes, one of them major. The most intense, Emily, was a Category 3 on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale and paralleled the North Carolina coastline, causing minor damage and several deaths before moving out to sea. In its inaugural year of 1993, Cabling Installation & Maintenance magazine was published four times quarterly, with about 100 pages of information per issue. The magazine highlighted emerging cabling industry topics including the pros and cons of the SC fiber-optic connector and the assets and liabilities of Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling. One 1993 feature took an in-depth look at the disaster recovery planning done by the telecommunications and data communications departments of Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA).
