The PortFinder Plug--an 8-pin modular jack with a light-emitting diode built into it--lets installers terminate outlets and patch panels randomly. After the installation, the installer labels the ports within the patch panels in sequential order and inserts a PortFinder Plug into each port. A second person plugs either an AC-style tone generator or the master unit of a continuity tester into a work-area outlet. The PortFinder Plug in the patch-panel port that corresponds to the activated work-area outlet lights up. Using handheld communications devices, the installer at the patch panel tells the installer at the work-area outlet which patch-panel port is lit. The installer at the work-area outlet then labels the outlet appropriately, and the installer at the patch panel removes the PortFinder Plug.

Manufactured by mod-tap, the PortFinder Plug has a 5-pound maximum mating force and lasts 750 mating cycles. The identifier comes in 100-unit packages.
