The Volition fiber-optic cabling system, 3M`s first full-system solution for the premises network market, includes 16 newly patented or patent-pending technologies.

One of Volition`s components is the VF-45 duplex interconnection, which includes a socket, plug, and a transceiver that support multiple network protocols. The interconnection is designed to feature the size and functionality of the 8-pin modular jack. Other components include a fiber-optic patch cord, rack-mounted patch panel with front and rear access to 24 ports, wall outlet and faceplate, and termination and cleaning kits.

Another key component is the media converter, an optoelectronic device that 3M designed in partnership with Honeywell`s Micro Switch Div. The device converts an electrical signal to an optical signal and vice versa, allowing customers to build a network that takes advantage of optical fiber in the horizontal cabling plant without replacing existing network interface cards and hubs.
