Optical tap module reduces link loss, occupies zero U

Corning Cable Systems’ Pretium Edge Tap Module is integrated into an interconnect or crossconnect module, with tap ports in the rear.

The Pretium Edge Tap Module from Corning Cable Systems enables passive optical tapping in data centers and storage area networks in a footprint that occupies zero U of rack space because it is integrated into the structured cabling system’s interconnect or crossconnect hardware.

The manufacturer says, “Other passive optical tap devices are separate components that take up rack space, introduce additional loss and limit network-design options. The Pretium Edge Tap Module … combines the functionality of an interconnect, crossconnect and optical tap in one structured cabling module.

“Unlike a separate passive component, Corning’s integrated approach allows monitored ports to be added or removed without disruption to the live network link, and provides flexibility to use both interconnect or crossconnect designs,” Corning Cable Systems continued. “Also, by locating the tap port links to the rear of the module, the Pretium Edge Tap Module creates a zero-U footprint.”

The company also explained the basics of tap modules and their functions: “A passive optical tap device uses a fiber-optic coupler to divide the optical signal into two outputs—one for live traffic and one for monitoring traffic. The live traffic continues through the system link, while the monitor traffic is sent to port-monitoring electronics.” The specific optical coupler used in the Pretium Edge Optical Tap reduces insertion loss, thereby allowing for increased distances on Ethernet and Fibre Channel links, the company notes.
