Fluke Networks introduces encircled flux modules for multimode fiber-optic cable testing

Modules for the DTX CableAnalyzer allow multimode testing per TIA-526-14-B and IEC 61280-1-4.

Fluke Networks has introduced encircled flux multimode fiber modules for its DTX CableAnalyzer testers. Encircled flux (EF) is a launch-condition specified in the TIA-526-14-B and IEC 61280-1-4 standards. Using the DTX-EMF2 modules enables the tester to function as an EF-compliant optical-loss test set (OLTS).

According to Fluke Networks, the modules achieve an autotest—loss measurement of two fibers at two wavelengths, optical-loss budget calculation, and pass/fail results—in up to 12 seconds. “As enterprise bandwidth demand increases, it is more important than ever for installers and network owners to certify and document that their fiber links meet established industry standards, to protect against network downtime and lost revenue,” the company said. It added that the newly available modules “enable you to easily and accurately test while ensuring compliance. Encircled flux compliance reduces loss-measurement variation to a goal off +/- 10 percent, decreasing measurement uncertainty and improving measurement repeatability every time. This is the standard that cabling manufacturers will expect for warranties.”

The modules, with their accompanying test reference cords, are a means of quickly upgrading a tester to EF compliance, Fluke Networks says. It also says no training or change to normal testing procedures is required to use the EF modules.
