Prysmian introduces 0.23-inch Category 6A cable

Aug. 24, 2020
The small outer diameter enables 142 cables to fit in a 4-inch conduit.

Prysmian Group and Panduit recently announced they jointly developed a channel-compliant Category 6A cable that is 0.23 inches in outside diameter (OD). The GenSPEED 10 MTP’s small OD allows 142 cables to fit in a 4-inch conduit, the companies pointed out.

“We’re always looking for ways to enhance our products to meet customer needs,” said James Malkemus, director of engineering for Prysmian. “Continuing to find ways to keep the benefits of a fully compliant cable while decreasing overall diameter is a challenge, and we are proud to be the first to have accomplished that in 2018 and now again this year.” Prysmian (General Cable) introduced a 0.25-inch version of the GenSPEED 10 MTP cable in 2018.

“GenSPEED 10 MTP is easier to install without concern for terminating during installation because it does not have a crossweb or separator,” Prysmian pointed out. “Available in plenum rating only, it is UL Listed LP 0.7A with a certified performance for high-power PoE applications up to 140W. The fully compliant cable meets or exceeds TIA standards by using Mosaic Variable Laser Cut Tape to provide alien-crosstalk headroom of +8 dB and a random laser cut pattern to deliver electromagnetic interference immunity.”

The company further pointed out that the cables are lighter than previous generations, and feature increased flexibility, which translates to simplified cable handling and optimized cable management.

“Our goal for the GenSPEED product line is to continue to lead the market in Category 6A innovation,” added Matt Marcus, product manager for datacom products at Prysmian Group. “Achieving another record for the smallest diameter is a great accomplishment for our team and illustrates Prysmian’s position as a world leader in wire and cable. We are creating futureproof solutions to allow for return on investment for our customers and installer base.”
