We’re paying homage to Mike Nichols, the acclaimed director of movies including The Graduate, who passed away last night at the age of 83. In this scene—perhaps The Graduate’s most recognized and most quoted—Mr. McGuire tells Ben “one word” … “Plastics.”
With all due respect to Mr. Nichols, we think the dialogue may have been even more compelling had it gone like this ..
Mr. McGuire: I want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Ben: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Ben: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Cable.
Ben: Exactly how do you mean?
Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in cable. Think about it. Will you think about it?
