Two years ago, Lucent Technologies` (Murray Hill, NJ) Bell Laboratories became one of the first organizations in the telecommunications industry to demonstrate high-speed data transmission over copper twisted-pair wire. Now the company has announced that it is incorporating this 622 megabit-per-second network performance into its Systimax Structured Cabling System (SCS) warranty.

"We`ve increased our network performance through power-sum technology," says Les Baxter, Systimax SCS director of research and development at Bell Labs. "Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair cabling systems have been designed to support 100-megabit applications. By applying power-sum technology to 4-pair cabling and connecting products, Lucent can offer superior performance characteristics."

Power-sum technology refers to the more stringent industry requirements placed on cabling systems with applications that use multiple pairs of wires in the same cable. It is an electrical performance-testing method that takes into account crosstalk, or interference, from every pair of wires in the cable. The integration of this technology makes it possible to support various applications such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode for simultaneous voice, data, and video transmission.
