Spotting, avoiding non-compliant cable the focus of online seminar

Jan. 20, 2012
UL, the CCCA and a law firm will present information covering research, potential liabilities, and what to watch out for.

A seminar hosted online by Cabling Installation & Maintenance will discuss the perils of buying and using noncompliant cable from several perspectives. The seminar will be held live on February 1 and sponsored by the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association, Underwriters Laboratories, and the law firm of Crowell & Moring. A representative of each of those organizations will make a presentation covering some aspect of non-compliant cable.

Todd Harpel, representing the CCCA, will present the findings of a series of tests that the CCCA commissioned on cable samples purchased through various channels in the U.S. We have covered some of these tests in the past, and in this presentation, Harpel will detail what the test results indicate.

Then, attorney Natalia R. Medley of Crowell & Moring will present a legal analysis of the potential liabilities that contractors and cabling installers could face if they install non-compliant cable.

UL's Steven Galan will make the final presentation, delivering information about the labeling and marks to look for on cable products in order to evaluate whether or not a cable is a non-compliance suspect.

After its live presentation on February 1, the seminar will be available on-demand for six months. Individuals who attend the seminar in its entirety, either live or on-demand, can earn one continuing education credit for the following professional designations offered by BICSI: RCDD, RITP, Installer 2, Technician and Certified Trainer.
