White paper discusses LAN and SAN applications for OM4 fiber
Dec. 19, 2011
CommScope document talks about total cost of ownership, 40/100G and high-speed Fibre Channel.
A brief white paper available from CommScope discusses the capabilities of, and applications for, OM4 multimode laser-optimized fiber and cable. The paper explains, "OM4 fiber gives the cabling infrastructure designer better performance to support longer distances or more connections for applications such as Ethernet and Fibre Channel. It also provides a cost-effective way of avoiding the use of expensive singlemode transceivers."
It then discusses how OM4 fiber cabling can be used in 40- and 100-Gbit/sec Ethernet networks as well as 16-, 8- and 4-Gibt/sec Fibre Channel networks.
The paper concludes by letting readers know that the use of CommScope's specific brand of OM4 fiber cabling "enables lowest total cost of ownership" by reducing initial capital expenses, reducing electric-power operating costs and also can reduce future capital costs "by providing a superior future upgrade path to faster applications without having to replace the cabling infrastructure or reconfigure the data center."
