Google now offering ultra-fast fiber-optic Internet -- but only in Kansas

Aug. 1, 2012
Is Google’s newly announced Fiber TV service destined to strike fear into the hearts of big cable company executives across the country?

Google Fiber may be destined for great things -- but at the moment Internet service is only available in Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO.

The offically announced and much balleyhooed fiber-optic service provided by Google has three plans available for Kansas consumers to pick from – one offering TV and Gigabit Internet, one with just Gigabit Internet, and one with free Internet. As reported by SlashGear, the new Gigabit Internet package from Google costs $70 per month and comes with a one-year contract.

The report cites the service's download and upload speeds of up to one gigabit with no data caps. The plan comes with a network box and 1TB of drive storage from Google. Google nominally charges a $300 construction fee that covers the cost of stringing fiber-optic cables to the consumer's house, but with the package plan that fee is waived.

As noted by TechCrunch, Google is doing some interesting things in trying to expedite its Kansas City fiber installations. Elsewhere, industry observers predict that Google’s newly announced Fiber TV service is destined to strike fear into the hearts of big cable company executives across the country.
