Category 6A F/UTP System Features Reduced-Diameter Cable

Leviton’s ATLAS-X1 FDT Millennium Cat 6A cable features the company’s Precision Twist Technology, which eliminates the need for a cross-filler in the cable.

Leviton recently announced the availability of its ATLAS-X1 FDT Millennium Category 6A global copper shielded cabling system. The system features Leviton’s new shielded Category 6A, named FDT—Foil reduced Diameter Technology. The cable uses a F/UTP construction and “delivers the smallest outside diameter F/UTP Category 6A-rated cable on the market,” the company said, adding the cable is available in all appropriate fire-safety ratings worldwide including plenum, riser, CPR, and LSZH.

“FDT is the most innovative shielded Cat 6A cable we have ever developed,” commented Todd Harpel, senior director of global copper cables at Leviton. “Using our Precision Twist Technology, our engineers were able to eliminate the cable cross-filler, so we’ve made a solution that is smaller, lighter, and easier to install, reducing termination time and jobsite waste.”

The system uses Leviton’s ATLAS-X1 shielded connectivity and FDT cable, which suppresses alien crosstalk and “is ideal for protecting signal integrity in noisy indoor environments where pathway space is at a premium,” the company continued. “In short, this translates to easier installations and greater cost savings.”

Precision Twist is a proprietary technology that “precisely controls variation in the cable’s twist, enabling Category 6A performance in a much smaller form factor,” Leviton further explained. “This facilitates exceptional alien crosstalk performance, surpassing industry standards, all within a compact cable design. It is this compact design that enables customers to decrease installation costs, leveraging smaller trays and conduits in new builds and reusing existing pathways in retrofit projects.”

Category 6A performance-level cabling is more popular than ever among users. BSRIA recently reported that worldwide in 2024, sales of Category 6A channels will surpass those of Category 6 for the first time.

In a data sheet for the ATLAS-X1 FDT Category 6A Millennium system, Leviton points out the system is particularly suited for the following applications, spaces, and circumstances.

  • 10GBase-T network applications and mission-critical systems
  • Optimal total cost of ownership for financial, health care, government, transportation, and educational environments
  • Space-constrained retrofits and upgrades
  • Network applications sensitive to EMI/RFI
  • Networks with high bandwidth utilization requirements
  • Applications where ensuring data security and integrity is critical
  • Applications requiring Power over Ethernet support up to 100 watts
  • AV systems for high-end conference rooms and classrooms
  • Wireless applications supporting IEEE 802.11ac/Wi-Fi 5 and higher
