Spliceless Fiber-to-the-Home System Saves Labor Costs
STL Optical Connectivity NA recently launched CONCAT, a fiber-to-the-home solution, after the system went through field trials with one of the U.S.’s largest telecommunications service providers.
“CONCAT is now available to digital infrastructure providers seeking faster fiber rollouts with reduced deployment complexity and labor,” the company said. “It enables up to 71% labor cost savings by eliminating most field splicing. CONCAT simplifies fiber deployment by shifting critical fiber preparation and termination into a controlled manufacturing environment ensuring consistent quality, faster installation, and lower operational risk in the field.”
The system is appropriate for new builds, network expansions, and overbuild programs that face aggressive broadband coverage and speed targets, STL Optical Connectivity NA pointed out. “By reducing installation time and field errors, CONCAT significantly improves overall project economics,” the company noted.
The system features a concatenated, preconnectorized MPO-to-LC cable assembly integrated with an enclosure and cassette architecture. It supports aerial and duct deployments. STL Optical Connectivity NA added that CONCAT’s “spliceless, modular design lets operators scale faster, add customers quicker, and cut truck rolls, rework, and labor dependency.
“Traditional FTTx rollouts rely heavily on fusion splicing in the field, a process that is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to inconsistencies. CONCAT transforms FTTx network deployments with its spliceless, plug-and-play design. With pre-connectorized assemblies and closures on hand, CONCAT enables fast emergency recovery. Only the feeder splice is needed; everything else is plug-and-play, saving splicer time and restoring service when every minute counts.”
The system comprises four core elements.
- Closures housing plug-and-play connectors
- Preterminated MPO-LC cable assemblies for seamless distribution-to-access interconnection
- Drop splitter modules to extend signal closer to the user
- Reusable reel system for simplified handling and reduced on-site waste
STL’s vice president of connectivity Ryan Chappell commented, “The U.S. broadband market is under enormous pressure to build faster, at lower cost, and with fewer skilled labor constraints. CONCAT is engineered for this reality. By eliminating field splicing and delivering true plug-and-play, we are enabling operators to accelerate FTTx rollouts while improving quality and reducing total deployment cost—a major step forward in how fiber networks are built in America.”
