Multiplexer connects four serial-data devices over existing T1/E1

TC Communications’ TC8610 is protocol-transparent and is compatible with 100-ohm T1 for copper line lengths to 6,000 feet.

The TC8610 Serial-over-T1/E1 Multiplexer, recently introduced by TC Communications, features latency of less than 85 µs, the company says. TC also described the multiplexer as “a low-cost method for connecting up to four serial data devices over existing T1/E1 links.”

The company further describes the multiplexer as protocol-transparent; it supports RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 (2- or 4-wire) interfaces up to 38.4 kbits/sec. RS232 interfaces support both synchronous-mode or asynchronous with control signals. Also, the TC8610 is compatible with standard 100-ohm T1 for copper line lengths to 6,000 feet, and up to 2.5 kilometers for 75-ohm/120-ohm E1, the company says. “Each serial port features individually isolated ground to eliminate problems with varying ground potential,” TC Communications explains.

The multiplexer’s diagnostics include dual in-line package (DIP) switches for local and remote loopback, and other configuration switches. Each unit provides multiple LEDs for alarm, power, Vcc, T1/E1 status, and Tx/Rx LEDs for each channel. Power redundancy is standard. Optional high-temperature versions (-20 deg. C to +70 deg. C), and extreme temperature versions (-40 deg. C to +80 deg. C) are available.
