Optical LAN supports wireless, other network operations for food manufacturer

SK Food Group’s new Columbus, OH facility uses Tellabs’ Optical LAN solution, and says it saves $100K in wireless applications alone.

Tellabs recently announced that its Optical LAN solution has been deployed in SK Food Group’s new manufacturing facility in Columbus, OH. The facility began operations in June 2014. IT solutions and service company STAT Communications installed the Optical LAN system in the SK facility; Tellabs added that the system “improves SK Food Group’s network performance while reducing equipment needs and supporting evolving network demands for years to come.”

In a release announcing the deployment, Tellabs noted that SK Food Group uses Optical LAN to support data, Voice over IP, wireless, surveillance, and manufacturing-control services. “By integrating wireless services onto the converged fiber-based infrastructure, Optical LAN provides backhaul and remote monitoring to improve wireless applications such as WiFi,” Tellabs noted. “The combination of Optical LAN with wireless equipment saves SK Food Group nearly $100,000 in wireless applications alone.”

The system also provides a simple architecture for SK’s large facility, Tellabs added, saying the system was “designed from scratch for the building’s needs. Requiring less equipment and cabling than copper-based LAN, Optical LAN delivers significant space savings that is critical for a facility with floor space allocated for production and storage [pictured immediately below].”

Melissa Stone, manager of IT for SK Food Group, commented, “Our new state-of-the-art facility required a technology that would meet the highest standards. The reputation of STAT Communications in combination with Tellabs’ customer testimonials and proven performance made the decision easy. Tellabs Optical LAN gave use a futureproof network, better performance and streamlined operations, while saving costs.”

STAT Communications vice president Ken Funai added, “This is the first commercial Optical LAN deployment in the Midwest, adding to our successful track record in this market. Being at the forefront of innovations, we know Tellabs’ Optical LAN was the best option for SK Food Group’s specific needs.”

Tellabs’ vice president of business development, Tom Ruvarac, concluded, “SK Food Group’s deployment of Tellabs Optical LAN is yet another demonstration that our solution is the smarter and simpler choice. From network convergence to simplified management, Tellabs’ Optical LAN is the ideal solution for solving the challenges of a modern, high-performance LAN today and in the future.”
