Transition Networks debuts Ethernet over 2-wire extender with PoE+

March 23, 2017
New devices extends Ethernet networks at near Gigabit speeds and provide full PoE+ power to security cameras, wireless access points, and other IP devices.

Transition Networks, Inc. has expanded its family of Ethernet extenders by introducing its Ethernet Over 2-Wire Extender With PoE+, designed to extend networks at near Gigabit speeds and provide power to security cameras, wireless access points, and other IP devices at distances beyond the typical 100m Ethernet cable limitation.

The company says the new extenders save time and money by leveraging existing unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling infrastructure to provide data and safety extra low voltage (SELV) power to IP/Ethernet devices in remote locations or at legacy sites, eliminating the need to install new cable and electrical power for upgrading, extending, or bridging networks. The extenders are used in pairs, with a local or remote device installed at opposite ends of the UTP cable, and Transition Networks’ proprietary SELV classification method prevents power delivery to unintended devices for added safety.

According to Transition Networks, "the extenders are the most flexible in the market with a 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 or 100/1000Base-X SFP combo port allowing connection to either copper or fiber Ethernet devices. Adding to the flexibility, these extenders provide an RJ-45 and 2-wire terminal block connection to accommodate CAT 5/6, CAT 3 or 2-wires of other 18-24 AWG UTP cable. The extenders can deliver full PoE+ at distances ranging from 400-7,000 feet (depending on cable type and number of wire pairs available), and data at half-gigabit Ethernet speeds over UTP cable at distances of 660 feet or fast Ethernet speeds at 2,000 feet (also depending on wire gauge). Advanced management and configuration can be performed through the user-friendly GUI using a single IP address. Features such as auto power reset provide further savings by allowing connected devices to be remotely monitored and rebooted in the event they become unresponsive, eliminating the need to dispatch technicians for simple power issues."

“The evolution from analog phones and PBXes to IP telephony and other cabling upgrades have left a lot of 2-wire cabling stranded in the walls of many enterprises. These new extenders can help network managers to leverage that asset for the latest Ethernet applications,” says GlenNiece Kutsch, product manager at Transition Networks. “This allows network operators to save time and money over installing new cable and electrical power when upgrading or extending networks.”

The EO2PSE4052-111 (local unit) and EO2PD4052-111 (remote unit) Ethernet Over 2-Wire Extender With PoE+ are IEEE 802.3af/at compliant and are available now. They will be making their debut on the show floor during the upcoming ISC West in Las Vegas and will be featured in the events "New Product Showcase. For more information, visit www.transition.com.
