A new white paper from APC-Schneider Electric explains electrical distribution terms and equipment types most commonly found in data centers.

The company notes that "electrical distribution equipment is the backbone of the data center as it provides the power path to all of the equipment in the data center, such as IT devices, cooling units, security, and lighting. More importantly this equipment ensures the safety of all personnel and equipment."

"IT professionals who are not familiar with the concepts, terminology, and equipment used in electrical distribution can benefit from understanding the names and purposes of equipment that support the data center, as well as the resot of the building in which the data center is located," states the paper's executive summary.

The paper is is intended to provide IT professionals with a useful vocabulary and frame of reference when specifying electrical designs for data centers.
