March 31, 2009 -- Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. announced that its 40-Gbit/sec Infiniband server and storage connectivity platforms enable a significant increase in performance and productivity for high-performance, unified and virtualized data center applications that utilize the Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series (formerly code-named "Nehalem"). Mellanox's 40-Gbit/sec networking products have been proven to provide up to 2x performance gain with the new Intel Xeon Processor 5500, compared to previous 20-Gbit/sec networking solutions with prior generation of Intel Xeon processors, while keeping the same envelope of power consumption. The combination provides the next generation IT platform for building the most efficient data centers, maintains Mellanox.

"As processor speeds continue to advance, the importance of having an interconnect fabric that provides the highest processor efficiency becomes critical," offers Jie Wu, Research Manager, Technical Computing at technology research firm IDC. "Mellanox InfiniBand adapters and switch products are a good complement to Intel's new line of Xeon processors, and together they provide greater performance gains to many applications in the technical computing space."

"Overall platform efficiency and CPU and memory utilization rely heavily on interconnect bandwidth and latency, and Mellanox's broad line of highly-efficient 40-Gbit/sec InfiniBand products ensure that CPU cycles are not wasted due to interconnect bottlenecks," adds John Monson, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. "The combination of Mellanox 40-Gbit/sec InfiniBand with 1us latency and Intel Xeon processor technology delivers extreme performance for the most demanding and mission-critical applications."

"The Intel Xeon 5500 series processors are designed for high-performance computing applications in enterprise and scientific environments, and maintaining a balanced platform between compute and I/O is key to our approach of delivering application and end-user visible results," says Jim Pappas, Director of Server Technology Initiatives at Intel. "By collaborating with Mellanox on server and interconnect optimization and tuning, we can efficiently deliver on customer needs for high-bandwidth 40-Gbit/sec low-latency networks."

Enterprise applications such as customer relationship management, database, virtualization, and web services as well as key vertical markets such as financial services, insurance services, and retail are demanding the highest possible performance from their computing systems. In addition, high-performance applications such as bioscience and drug research, data mining, digital rendering, electronic design automation, fluid dynamics, and weather analysis also require the highest throughput to support the I/O requirements of multiple processes that each require access to large datasets to compute and store results. The combination of Mellanox 40-Gbit/sec interconnect solutions and servers based on Intel Xeon processors delivers optimum performance to meet these challenges.

Mellanox's line of ConnectX 40-Gbit/sec InfiniBand adapters, MTS3600 36-port, 40-Gbit/sec InfiniBand switch system, and MTS3610 324-port, 40-Gbit/sec InfiniBand switch system are available now.
