March 2, 2009 -- The Fiber Dome Closure FDC 10S from 3M Communication Markets Division is designed to give service providers a new option for protecting the fiber splice joints over long-haul, metro, local access, and fiber-to-the-premises feeder and distribution networks.

Hermetically sealed for aerial, pedestal, or below-grade applications, the new FDC 10S is designed for butt-splice applications using either single or ribbon fiber cable. The fixed O-ring sealing system, along with the dome's latching mechanism that requires no special tools, means quick installation that does not compromise environmental or mechanical protection, 3M says.

Additional features include: spacious slack storage area for routing, protecting, and "expressing" buffer tubes or ribbon fibers; adjustable and removable tray support bracket for easier installation of cables after the initial install; hinged splice trays for access to any splice without distributing other trays.

The FDC 10S is equipped with one oval port for express or mid-span cable applications and five round branch cable ports. The oval main cable port accommodates two 27-mm (1.06-inch) diameter cables and each of the round cable ports accommodate one 18-mm (0.71-inch) diameter all-dielectric or armored cable. The splice capacity of the FDC 10S is 288 single fiber or 432 mass fusion splices.

Like the recently released Fiber Dome Closure FDC 08S from 3M, the FDC 10S fiber dome closure uses the external cable assembly module (ECAM) built-in cable entry port system. The ECAM design enables plug-and-play capability that can reduce installation and labor costs because the cable preparation and installation are completed outside of the closure body. The built-in cable entry system is designed to enable the technician to add and remove cables from the closure without breaking the cable seals.
