Core-Alignment Fusion Splicer Has Dual-Fiber Prep System

Fujikura Europe recently introduced the 100S, a single-fiber core alignment splicer that includes a dual-fiber preparation system. The system enables engineers and installers to strip, cleave, and load two fibers at once, which the company points out is a key step forward in fiber installation and maintenance.

“The 100S, the successor to the widely adopted 90S+, has undergone a thoughtful evolution that streamlines every stage of the fiber preparation process and ensures a more-intuitive splicing workflow,” Fujikura Europe said.

The 100S features Fujikura’s active fusion control and active blade management technologies, “ensuring low splice loss through real-time fusion control and intelligent blade management that automatically adjusts for wear,” the company added. “But the model offers a distinct advantage over other core-alignment splicers with its dual-fiber technology.”

Dual-fiber preparation begins with the installer stripping two fibers simultaneously using Fujikura’s SS05 strippers. Those fibers then can be simultaneously cleaved in the CT60 cleaver, which was introduced at the same time the 100S was. The fibers are then placed in the 100S at the same time. The 100S’s fiber clamping mechanism allows the user to load two fibers into the splicer at once. When the left and right fibers are set in the base of the sheath clamp, the setting mechanism responds to pressure from the operator’s fingers, and causes the sheath clamp lids to close automatically, eliminating the need to close them manually with a free hand.

Fujikura emphasizes this more-efficient preparation approach reduces overall splice time—from prep to taking a completed splice to the heater—by 20%.

“The 100S enhances an engineer’s workflow and supports the efficiency of their network installations and maintenance like no other splicer ever has to date,” comments Yamato Sakurai, technical director at Fujikura Europe. “When we are developing a new splicer, we are considering the realities of being in the field working and the challenges engineers face. That’s what led us to create a system that allows the user to prepare two fibers simultaneously. Having this available on our core-alignment machine is a real benchmark and one that we believe will help engineers and installers around the world in improving delivery and output, while maintaining low splice loss in the process.”
