Visual fault finder

July 1, 1999
The VFF5 visual fault finder is a laser-diode light source designed to find breaks, faulty splices, and crimps; macro bends; and poor components and connections in fiber-cable runs. The device is used to verify continuity, test, and find breaks in local area networks, telephony, data links, and loops as well as other applications where fiber is used instead of copper. The device is used to verify continuity, test, and find breaks in local area networks, telephony, data links, and loops as well as other applications where fiber is used instead of copper. Packaged in a rugged metal housing, the fault finder is a slim, pen-style, battery-operated tool that focuses on a highly visible red light into the fiber. The tester is equipped with a high-power, extra-long-life 670-nanometer laser diode that operates either in continuous or modulated/blinking mode. It works with either singlemode or multimode fiber-optic cable over a distance to 3 miles and is intended for use as a stand-alone, first-line basic trouble-shooting tool or with an optical time- domain reflectometer to isolate faults.
