Described by its manufacturers as a panel-to-panel cabling system, DataThing incorporates voice and data cabling into systems furniture and includes three components: in-feed, communication distribution assembly, and outlet tap assembly.

In-feeds connect furniture cabling to building cabling. An in-feed can be hidden within the furniture, mounted on the furniture, or located on an adjacent structure within a protective enclosure.

The communication distribution assembly (cda) distributes bundles of cabling through the furniture panels. cdas contain six 4-pair circuits. krone`s High Tap connectors on each end of the cda snap together by hand with a positive locking mechanism. They also self-align to facilitate connection between systems furniture pieces. Typically, DataThing uses a group of three cdas to form an 18-circuit backbone. cdas are reusable.

Outlet tap assemblies provide outlets for telephones, computers, fax machines, and other communications equipment. The tap plugs into the cda (see inset), and the communications equipment plugs into the jack. All three components can be installed without any specialized tools.

Partnering to produce DataThing are connector-manufacturer krone Inc. (Englewood, CO) and furniture manufacturer Haworth Inc. (Holland, MI) The system is distributed exclusively through Anixter.
