IT standards group changes name

January 15, 2002--The 40-year-old organization now known as the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards says its new name reflects its worldwide reach.

The standards group that began functioning 40 years ago under the name X3 has adopted a new name-the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS--www.incits.org). The organization says its new name reflects its international agenda and membership. The group was called the National Committee for Information Technology Standards for the past six years. It has 52 technical committees and 261 active projects, as well as 612 published standards.

"We replaced 'National' with 'InterNational' to reflect our agenda of developing market-driven standards with global relevance and reach," said executive board chair Karen Higginbottom, who is employed by Hewlett-Packard. The executive board includes 22 representatives of IT producers, consumers, and academia.

The conversion to the new name will take place over the first half of this year, as the change is implemented on the organization's Web site and on the standards developed or adopted by INCITS.
