Spediant Systems developing Multi-Loop DSL copper solution

Nov. 15, 2002 - Device will allow a small business to extend its Ethernet network.

Spediant Systems is developing a Multi-Loop DSL copper solution designed to let carriers deliver greater bandwidth and new services to business customers that have previously only been available via optical fiber.

Utilizing existing copper infrastructure, Spediant representatives say Multi-Loop DSL (MLDSL) can let a small business extend its Ethernet network with a full speed of Mbits/sec as it is transmitted across the public network.

The technology, aimed at small to medium-sized business for whom optical fiber is often a prohibitive expense, takes multiple spare copper pairs and groups them into a logical bundle, then inversely multiplexing data over them. The DSL is designed to provide Ethernet-rate services for a distance of several kilometers from the central office.

MLDSL is expected to be available for trial installations early next year.

Spediant, a new subsidiary of DSL-maker Orckit Communications, is based in Red Bank, N.J. For more information visit www.spediant.com.
