A recent report from Cahners In-Stat Group (Scottsdale, AZ) indicates that the 4Q99 Gigabit Ethernet LAN packet switch market grew 350 percent over the same period a year ago. The study predicts that the market will exceed 1.3 million ports shipped during the first half of 2000-greater than the total number of ports shipped in all of 1999.
"The introduction of the first Gigabit Ethernet over copper modules will fuel the growth of switches, not only in the backbone, but in the wiring closet as well," says Lauri Vickers, industry analyst for In-Stat's Voice and Data Communications Group.
While North America shipments represented 49 percent of the entire market during 4Q99, Europe, Asia and Latin America combined are expected to represent the majority of switch port shipments in 2000.
