A DSL self-installation kit from GTE (Irving, TX) is said to make it easier and quicker for customers to hook up to high-speed Internet access. The kit contains a DSL external modem, microfilters and installation instructions, and is being mailed to new DSL customers in the 17 states in which GTE offers service. Upon receipt of the kit, customers follow step-by-step installation instructions, and are typically up and running less than an hour.

By the end of the year, GTE expects to sign up more than 200,000 DSL customers, offer DSL from 1,000 wire centers, and have more than eight million ADSL-qualified telephone access lines. A webcast demonstration of GTE DSL can be seen at www.gte.com/dsll/resdemo
