GlobeSpan Inc. (Red Bank, NJ; www.globespan.net), a provider of IC, software and system designs for DSL applications, says it will take a leading role in the mass-market deployment of SHDSL (symmetric high-bit-rate digital subscriber line) technology by becoming a founding member of the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory SHDSL Consortium. SHDSL offers improved performance by delivering symmetric data rates from 192 Kbits/sec to 2.3 Mbits/sec over standard copper wire pairs, and up to 4.6 Mbits/sec with dual-pair implementations at distances much greater than traditionally deployed systems.
