August 15, 2001 Berk-Tek (www.berktek.com), a Nexans company, on August 14 unveiled a series of CMP-50 plenum-rated cables. The company's Limited Combustible line of plenum cables is available in Category 3, Category 5, Category 5e, and enhanced Category 5e versions. The products are jacketed and insulated with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), and have been tested by Underwriters Laboratories to verify that they meet the CMP-50 smoke-emission and flame-spread requirements. The cables also meet the same electrical specifications that the company's CMP and CMR versions meet.

"We are very concerned about the accumulation of combustible materials and the fire hazards they present to the end-user community," said Dan Kennefick, Berk-Tek copper products business manager. "As an industry leader, we feel a responsibility to introduce CMP-50 cable to the industry."

He pointed out that the introduction of CMP-50 cable will not eliminate Berk-Tek's CMP or OFNP plenum cable. "This new classification is additive, and is being established as a more-fire-safe option for those who wish to install cable in air-return plenums," he said.

The CMP-50 lines are available for immediate shipment, the company said. The LANmark-350 CMP-50 cable has been tested, and is certified in the NetClear GT Enhanced Category 5e solution, offered by Berk-Tek and Ortronics.
