U.S. wireless leader named to board of Canadian firm

June 26, 2001 Henry Burkhalter has been appointed to the board of directors at Wi-LAN Inc.

June 26, 2001 Henry Burkhalter, who while serving as chief operating officer for WorldCom Wireless Solutions was responsible for deployment of licensed wireless spectrum for U.S. broadband access services, has been appointed to the board of directors at Wi-LAN Inc. (Calgary, AB; www.wi-lan.com). He has served as chairman of two committees within the Wireless Communication Association International (WCA), where he testified before Congress and the FCC on behalf of the wireless industry.

Wi-Lan Inc. specializes in developing high-speed wireless Internet access, LAN/WAN extension, and broadband wireless access products. Chairman and CEO Hatim Zaghloul says "Mr. Burkhalter's knowledge of the wireless industry will provide valuable counsel for for Wi-Lan's strategic planning, and his experience in government relations will be instrumental in future company initiatives."

Wi-Lan believes its W-OFDM patent is necessary for devices using the IEEE 802.11a or HiperLAN/2standards. OFDM--orthoganol frequency division multiplexing--is considered a cornerstone technology for next-gen high-speed wireless data products worldwide.
