New cloth reduces fiber polishing to a single step

December 6, 2001 The APC 100 is already in use at technical colleges in North Carolina and Virginia.

nnovative Fiber Technologies has developed the APC 100 Series abrasive polishing cloth, which is designed to reduce costs and improve optical fiber network reliability.

The cloth has applications for any industries that use optical fiber, including telecommunications, utilities, aerospace, the government and armed services, and educational and training institutions. The cloth is being distributed by Virginia Beach, Va.-based KITCO Fiber Optics, a distributor and manufacturer of optical fiber products.

Traditional optical fiber polishing requires multiple polishing steps using abrasive, medium and fine grade Mylar films or papers. The APC 100 Series cloth is designed to require only one polishing step on one sheet of cloth that lasts up to 15 times as long as traditional film and paper.

"You get many more connectors polished per cloth and with excellent quality," says Larry Widgeon, president of KITCO Fiber Optics. "It greatly reduces signal transmission loss and glass breakage, even when being used by a novice installer. Basically, it makes for a great connector."

The cloth is now being used for optical fiber installation certification training at ECPI College of Technology locations in Virginia and North Carolina.

These Tower Tech XR cooling towers use evaporative cooling to remove heat generated within the data center by IT equipment. Composite cooling towers are more compact and significantly lighter than metal towers. They arrive at a data center site pre-built.
Data center designers shouldn’t sleep on the benefits of fiberglass construction materials.
