Dätwyler Cables develops Cat 7A cable

April 10, 2008 -- Dätwyler Cables (Altdorf, Switzerland) has introduced its twisted-pair Uninet 7120 data cable, billed as a very thin, high-quality PiMF [Pair in Metal Foil] cable that meets all requirements for 1000-MHz Category 7A transmission.

April 10, 2008 -- Dätwyler Cables (Altdorf, Switzerland) has introduced its twisted-pair Uninet 7120 data cable, billed as a very thin, high-quality PiMF [Pair in Metal Foil] cable that meets all requirements for Category 7A transmission.

The Uninet 7120 has a copper wire diameter of only 0.58 millimetres, corresponding to AWG 23. In combination with high-performance connectors, the cables can be used at up to 1000 Megahertz (MHz), enabling them to easily support 10-Gigabit Ethernet applications (10GBASE-T).

The data cable has a FRNC/LSOH sheath, is 7.4 mm thick and weighs 63 kg/km, with a copper count of 32.3 kg per km. At a frequency of 1000 MHz, its attenuation is less than 60 decibels (dB) and its NEXT-value (near end crosstalk) is 90 dB.

When installing a local area networks (LAN) that must meet the requirements of Class EA (up to 500 MHz), AWG 23 data cables, particularly those in Category 7 (up to 600 MHz), are preferable, contends the company. With its 1000 MHz range, the company says the Uninet 7120 offers higher reserves for the transmission of digital and analog voice, image, multimedia and data signals, and is an ideal cable for providing space-saving, high-speed connections in data centers.

"With our current innovation, we have succeeded in raising the Ca 7A quality to AWG 23 diameters for the first time," comments Markus Grüter, marketing head at Dätwyler Cables. "The high reserves of the Uninet 7120 provide long-term investment security with regard to future applications and upcoming data transmission rates, but with far smaller space requirements and at an excellent cost/benefit ratio."
