JDSU adds Carrier Ethernet test capability to T-BERD/MTS platform

June 1, 2009 -- JDSU introduced its Just-Proof (J-Proof) feature set for its T-BERD/MTS transport network test products, the T-BERD/MTS-6000A multi-services application module and T-BERD/MTS-8000 transport module. With the J-Proof testing, JDSU says that carriers can ensure the expedient turn-up of carrier-grade Ethernet circuits with quality of service (QoS) and service level agreements (SLAs) in environments that employ third-party networks.

According to the company, designed for technicians who troubleshoot and turn-up end-to-end Ethernet circuits, the J-Proof feature set verifies transparent forwarding of Ethernet frames over switched Ethernet networks. When Ethernet passes over switched Ethernet networks, the company maintains that improperly configured network elements (routers, switches, etc.) can filter or even drop critical network transmissions, necessitating hours of troubleshooting and causing turn-up delays.

Delays are further complicated when they occur over third party networks; by using the J-Proof feature set, JDSU says that carriers can confidently test that their Ethernet traffic passes through networks, including third-party networks, from end-to-end, and that they do not have to build their networks from scratch.

"To make Ethernet carrier-grade, Ethernet control plane messages must be reliably exchanged between all equipment regardless of where on the circuit the equipment is located," explains Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "With the J-Proof feature set, JDSU inspires this confidence."

Features in the J-proof test option include Ethernet frame transparency testing over VLAN and Q-in-Q; VLAN Priority setting to ensure control messages do not time out or get dropped; Cisco Proprietary Protocol Test to verify commonly-used Cisco VTP and CDP end-to-end; and GARP and STP tests to confirm registration and topology protocols. A user interface with both Pass/Fail and granular results helps technicians quickly evaluate test results as well as troubleshoot problems.

With the addition of the new feature set, the company says its T-BERD/MTS transport test solutions offer a single-source Carrier Ethernet test portfolio that facilitates analysis of all seven layers of Metro Ethernet services. Targeting NEMs and service providers, the platform provides field applications for servicing Metro Core telecom networks, wireless/cable switch centers and backhaul networks, government telecommunications, and network equipment manufacturer field installation and support groups.
