January 21, 2010 --Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. in Tokyo plans to introduce two FITEL fusion splicers -- the S178A this month and the S153A in February.

The S178A Core Alignment Fusion Splicer is the successor to the S177A. It features a more rugged, compact, and lightweight body, with improved splicing and heating time.

The S178A Core Alignment Fusion Splicer from Furukawa Electric. The upcoming S153A will use the same housing.

The S153A, which will use the same rugged housing as the S178A, will use active clad alignment to lower splicing loss with less user skills required compared to a conventional fixed V-groove clad alignment fusion splicer.

These two machines are for harsh operating conditions with their improved shock and impact resistance with rubber pads embedded on four corners of the splicer body. The machines resist water to IPX2 and resist dust to IP5X.

Protection sleeve shrink time is 25 seconds, while splicing requires seven seconds. Power saving allows as many as 200 splicing cycles with two built in rechargeable batteries.
