Pulse~LINK launches UWB HDMI-over-coax, wireless HDMI designs

December 7, 2007 -- The company says the designs enable real-time HD audio and video distribution throughout homes for a "digital home cinema" experience.

December 7, 2007 -- Ultra Wideband (UWB) semiconductor provider Pulse~LINK Inc. announced that its CWave HDMI-Over-Coax and Wireless HDMI production ready reference designs are now available for CE device manufacturers. The company says designs enable real-time high definition audio and video distribution throughout homes with "guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS)" for enabling a "digital home cinema" experience.

The company calls its CWave UWB HDMI-Over-Coax and Wireless HDMI transmit and receive units "small form factor, production ready reference designs for enabling OEM customers quick market entry." The HDMI products offer real-time, visually lossless wired and wireless streaming of high quality audio and video content between entertainment source devices and HDTV displays. Video data is encoded using the JPEG2000 video codec, the same codec used by movie theaters for "digital cinema," providing a secure, high definition home theater experience.

According to the company, while the CWave UWB HDMI-Over-Coax technology has previously enabled high quality transport and content protection mechanisms limited to single room fixed point-to-point applications, the new reference design extends this reach over existing coax cabling, including splitters, allowing consumers to access high-bandwidth HD content from entertainment source devices in one room and display it in any other room in the house.

Also, the company says its CWave UWB Wireless HDMI design reduces the "rat's nest" of connector wires behind entertainment systems, enabling clean installation of wall-mounted flat-panel displays anywhere in a room. The HDMI extender enables longer-range, secure wireless connectivity between the HDTV display and multiple entertainment source devices such as video game consoles, DVRs, Blu-ray DVD and HD DVD players.

"Streaming HD content around the home presents the greatest technical challenges for home networking and exposes bandwidth and Quality-of-Service limitations," comments John Santhoff, Pulse~LINK's founder and CTO. "CWave provides a 'no new wires' solution, extending the reach of HDMI from room-to-room over existing coax cabling and wirelessly connecting devices within each room using the same chip."
