TIA publishes voice communications standard

June 16, 2004
June 16, 2004 - Document is a revision of earlier standard.

The Telecommunications Industry Association has published a new standard, Enhanced Variable Rate Codec Speech Option 3 for Wideband Spread Spectrum Digital Systems, TIA-127-A.

The document is a revision of TIA/EIA/IS-127.

Service Option 3 provides two-way voice communications between the base station and the mobile station using the dynamically variable data rate speech codec algorithm described in this standard. The transmitting speech codec takes voice samples and generates an encoded speech packet for every traffic channel frame. The receiving station generates a speech packet from every traffic channel frame and supplies it to the speech codec for decoding into voice samples.

TIA-127-A was created by TIA TR-45.5 Subcommittee on Spread Spectrum Digital Technology and released in May.

The TIA is based in Arlington, VA. For more information visit www.tiaonline.org.
