SYSTIMAX launches UTP cabling solution that can support 10-Gbit Ethernet

Dec. 15, 2004
Dec. 15, 2004 - Company believes it is the first manufacturer to provide a complete UTP solution that fully complies with the IEEE 802.3an task force guidelines for 10GBase-T.

SYSTIMAX Solutions today launched a cabling solution capable of supporting 10-Gbit Ethernet.

SYSTIMAX believes it is the first vendor to provide a complete UTP solution that fully complies with the latest IEEE 802.3an task force guidelines for 10GBase-T. The company has developed the SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED X10D Solution to provide a next-generation total solution that is designed to support both the bandwidth needs of today's enterprises and the needs of more demanding applications such as high resolution video, grid computing and Storage Area Network/Network Attached Storage (SAN/NAS).

The GigaSPEED X10D Solution is an extension and evolution to existing Category 6/Class E specifications, which SYSTIMAX Solutions launched in 1997 with the GigaSPEED Solution. The GigaSPEED X10D Solution is protected by the SYSTIMAX SCS 20-year Extended Product Warranty and Application Assurance.

SYSTIMAX Labs has designed a solution that is compliant with the latest cabling channel requirements set out by the IEEE 802.3an task force. The IEEE 802.3an has adopted new channel specifications for 10GBase-T, known as IEEE Model No.1 PSANEXT (Power Sum Alien Near End Crosstalk) and Insertion Loss. These specifications also are being adopted by the international cabling standard committees in the creation of "new Class E" or "Augmented Category 6" cabling specifications.

SYSTIMAX Labs considers these channel specifications technically stable and is introducing a cabling solution that fully supports these requirements over 100 meters including four connections.

Managing the interaction between cables, patch cords and connectors is a major challenge in achieving the performance required to support 10 Gbits/sec speeds. To achieve substantial reduction in alien crosstalk, SYSTIMAX Labs utilized its Modal Decomposition Modeling (MDM) tool to evaluate the 1,024 interactions between adjacent, as well as within individual, cabling components. In addition, the performance of the GigaSPEED X10D Solution has been tested and qualified in what is viewed as worst-case installation channel test configurations, known as the "6-around-1" cable configuration.

"Through tools such as MDM, we believe we are able to provide our customers with cabling that will see them into the future with full channel performance of the system they have installed," says Luc Adriaenssens, vice president, R&D and technology, SYSTIMAX Solutions. "With the dramatic rise in the number of end users that are simultaneously activating multiple applications, bandwidth needs are inevitably going to increase. We believe that our GigaSPEED X10D Solution is the most advanced UTP cabling solution offered and are delighted to be the first vendor to provide a full UTP, end-to-end 10 Gigabit solution."

Adriaenssens says that high-speed technologies such as 10-Gbit Ethernet already are being deployed in areas of the local area network or LAN.

"For the near term," he says, "these may be concentrated on the interconnection of high-performance servers and switches in data centers, CAD stations and other high performance computing environments, and backbone applications supporting increased use of Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop. However, 10-Gbit speeds to the desktop are expected to become a reality due to steadily increasing bandwidth demands coupled with a reduction in the cost of interface electronics and the potential adoption of technologies such as grid computing."

"Data centers are expected to be a huge driving force behind the acceptance of 10-Gbit Ethernet," Adriaenssens continues, "and we expect other institutions, such as banking, medical and movie studios, to be close behind. Businesses that use high-bandwidth applications, multi-site collaboration, streaming media and/or distributed processing technologies are highly likely to be early users of 10-Gbit Ethernet. Such businesses could certainly benefit from the high-performance capabilities that the GigaSPEED X10D Solution provides."

The GigaSPEED X10D product portfolio features:
* GigaSPEED 91 Series Cable, available in plenum, non-plenum and low smoke zero halogen versions,
* Universal Modular Patching (UMP) Panel,
* MGS500 outlets,
* GS10E patch cords.
