Technical trade-offs for video surveillance

Jan. 14, 2015
Motorola technical brief investigates how network designers can find the right balance of image quality, frame rate, and bandwidth.

A recent technical white paper from Motorola is entitled Video Surveillance Trade-Offs. The brief investigates how, for security and AV deployments in the areas of public safety and law enforcement, finding the right combination of image quality, frame rate and bandwidth in video surveillance networks is primarily "a question of balance."

"The benefits of video surveillance - from monitoring and real-time protection to investigation and evidence preservation - are largely dependent on the quality of the images transmitted by digital video surveillance cameras and networks," points out the paper's executive summary.

It continues, ""In the best of all possible worlds, every video surveillance image would be clear, smooth, sharp and 'just like being there' every time. In reality, designers of public safety video systems face a series of choices, or trade-offs, that balance video surveillance quality and effectiveness with bandwidth affordability. Based on the levels of image quality needed and available funding, video network operators must find just the right balance, making choices about bandwidth, resolution, frame rate and compression."

The discussion goes on to investigate how, to balance the need for high quality images with the need for affordable solutions, network designers and operators can best navigate these trade-offs. Ultimately the technical brief seeks "to help CIOs and other professionals understand the factors they must consider in planning and deploying efficient, cost-effective video surveillance networks," writes Motorola.
