Extreme Networks (NASDAQ: EXTR) has introduced an Ethernet-based physical security network platform designed to help reduce installation costs, while simplifying operations associated with networked physical security systems, including integrated alarms, IP surveillance cameras, door locks and related elements.
Extreme says the new platform, delivered in conjunction with the company's technology partners including Milestone Systems and Axis Communications, supports surveillance and perimeter security, intelligent buildings, traffic cameras, equipment alarms, and tracking. The platform includes Extreme's Summit X440, Summit X460, and Summit X670 switches, all powered by the ExtremeXOS modular operating system (OS).

Software intelligence embedded in the ExtremeXOS system automates tasks including camera and device discovery, configuration, authentication, power management via Power over Ethernet (PoE/PoE+), and network policy assignment to provide superior network availability and resiliency. The Summit switches support for PoE+ includes a range of power supply options which means more devices per switch, adds the company.
Via the platform, Extreme says that companies can make faster installs, reduce truck rolls and change-outs, and increase security on port access with greater device and user visibility. The platform provides maximum loads on switches for improved speed, performance, and reliability, contends the company. Further, switches can be configured at a granular level to support specific devices, such as a single model of surveillance camera. The camera can then be authenticated on the network and assigned to a dedicated security network with the benefit of reducing interference from other devices and services.
