The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), which develops standards for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, on April 16 announced it has released a new document entitled, ANSI/TIA-455-178-C, FOTP-178 IEC 60793-1-32 Optical Fibres – Part 1- 32: Measurement Methods and Test Procedures – Coating Strippability.
ANSI/TIA-455-178-C specifies requirements as a part of IEC 60793 intended primarily for testing either fibers as produced by a fiber manufacturer or subsequently overcoated (tight buffered) using various polymers. The test can be performed either on fibers as produced or after exposure to various environments.
The object of this standard is to establish uniform requirements for the mechanical characteristic of coating strippability. This test quantifies the force required to mechanically remove the protective coating from optical fibers along their longitudinal axis.
ANSI/TIA-455-178-C was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems, TR-42.12 Optical Fibers and Cables subcommittee.
TIA actively seeks participation in this project from the user and general interest communities. For more information about TR-42 and how to participate in standards development with TIA, contact Cheryl Thibideau at [email protected].
TIA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and is a sponsor of ANSI's Standards Boost Business campaign. Visit www.standardsboostbusiness.org for details. ANSI/TIA-455-178-C and all TIA standards may be purchased at http://global.ihs.com.
