February 27, 2002--The organization can now carry out fiber-optic testing at its Northbrook, IL facility as well as its Melville, NY facility.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL--www.ul.com) has acquired a fiber-optic test lab for its Northbrook, IL facility. The new equipment used at the facility is designed to evaluate fiber-optic connectors, patch cords, cables and fan-outs.

With the addition of fiber-optic test equipment, UL has developed four new optical-fiber certification services for clients. The services are: Listed Optical Fiber Cable Assemblies and Connectors (QBFA), Listed Optical Fiber Branching Devices (QBEA), Optical Fiber Cable Assemblies and Connectors Verified in Accordance with National or International Specifications (QBFN), and Optical Fiber Branching Devices Verified in Accordance with National or International Specifications (QBEN).

UL says that testing requirements are flexible and can be conducted under Telcordia/Bellcore, TIA/EIA, ISO/IEC, or other published industry standards.

Northbrook is the newest of two UL sites to offer fiber-optic testing. UL's Melville, NY facility is the other.
