April 26, 2001 The Fiber Optics LAN Section (FOLS) of the Telecommunications Industry Association (www.tiaonline.org) has announced that it will hold an interoperability demonstration of equipment meeting the pending 100Base-SX standard at the upcoming BICSI event in Las Vegas, NV, held May 7-10. The new standard supports Fast Ethernet using 850-nanometer wavelength optics, according to the FOLS, offering a simple and inexpensive upgrade path from 10-Mbit/sec to 100-Mbit/sec Ethernet.
To be run over 300 meters of multimode fiber-optic cable, the demonstration will feature network interface cards (NICs), media converters, and small-form-factor fiber-optic connectors from FOLS member companies Transition Networks, Sun Conversion Technologies, IMC Networks, Allied Telesyn, GarrettCom, Tyco Electronics, Lucent Technologies, 3M/Volition, and Micro Linear.
